Brits helping attain peace in Mindanao
Read over at Luwaran.info that UK is now part of the Peace Team to end the war here in Mindanao.
Robert Hannigan, security adviser to UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who helped negotiate the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, that set power-sharing terms between the UK and Northern Ireland, met with Mohagher Iqbal, MILF chief peace negotiator, Atty. Datu Michael Mastura, member of the MILF peace panel, Jun Mantawil, head of MILF peace panel secretariat, and Atty. Abdul Dataya, head of the MILF Ad Hoc Joint Action Group (AHJAG). Also with the MILF delegation were other members of the MILF peace panel secretariat.
Its a good thing that the government has asked the help of other personalities who will be able to provide their experience and expertise when handling situations such as this.
However, it looks like the MILF won’t be agreeing to anything yet.
The MILF, on the other hand, told the visitors that a real peace deal cannot come to Mindanao soon, citing three reasons:
1) President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has no political will and only very few in her Cabinet support the peace process;
2) Oligarchs (business and political) in Mindanao and Manila are the main stumbling block to the peace process; and
3) Only few personalities in the Catholic Church in the Philippines support the peace process.
You know what dear reader? I agree with those 3 reasons. But that doesn’t mean that i support their actions on how to attain peace. Who would want to support destruction and those who give fear to our fellow pinoys?
I really do hope the peace pannel can come into a good agreement. Not the type that would separate Mindanao from the Philippines, but one that will unite even more the 3 big islands of our dear country.
