Davao City not part of Davao del Sur?

January 10, 2008

Accorrding to Mindanews, the Davao City council passed a resolution asking President Arroyo to issue a directive to all concerned Government agencies to Separate Davao City from Davao del Sur…  the statistics of Davao City that is…

Councilor Peter Lavina is the proponent of the resolution.

Laviña said the Davao City’s statistics is still being lumped with Davao Del Sur even though Davao City, which became a chartered city in 1937, is older than Davao del Sur which was carved out of the undivided Davao province in 1967.

He said the practice of combining the statistics of Davao City with Davao Del Sur is creating confusion.

Laviña cited as example the data of the Commission on Elections with Davao Del Sur as one of the vote-rich areas in the country at 1,232,053 voters as of  April 2007. But the 1.2 million figure actually includes Davao City’s 751,097 voters.

Laviña added that the postal code of Davao City, 8000, is still under Davao del Sur even if Davao City is not a component of it. Davao del Sur’s component city is Digos City.

i know that davao city is not belong to davao del sur, that’s why i usually filled up the province part with davao city not davao del sur. one thing that makes other confused is that in every government and even in private sectors, davao del sur is usually nest to davao city as the city address. i hope the government will change this stereotype error.

As a Dabawenyo, I always inform through letters that Davao City is not part of Davao del Sur. There was once a snail mail sent to me with the address only as “Davao”. I took the pain in writing the sender to complete the address as “Davao City” because there are other Davao areas in Davao Region.. and they did.. 🙂

Postal rules always say that only the city of Manila should not be attached to other province. Because there is only one Manila. Hence, when you live in Caloocan City, you must specify in the address as Caloocan City, Metro Manila. Same as other cities, just like the case of San Fernando both in La Union and Pampanga.

Indicating Davao City, Davao del Sur in the envelope or package eases the postal staff work.
